About Needle Desk

Needle Desk is an independent reference for choosing a sewing machine needle. It has a finder that matches your machine model, needle system, fabric and problem to what manufacturers and manuals say, a size chart, guides by fabric (denim, stretch knits, leather), a Tex-to-needle calculator and a page for each machine model we cover.

Where the facts come from. Manufacturer manuals and support pages (Singer, Brother, Janome, JUKI, BERNINA, bernette, Baby Lock, PFAFF), needle makers (SCHMETZ) and one supplier chart (the WAWAK Tex-to-needle chart, where we disclose a correction to its Tex 160 to 265 rows). The source is shown next to every claim, with the page number where there is one.

How model records are verified. A model record is read from that model’s own manual: the needle system, sizes, chart rows and how to fit the needle are quoted as the manual prints them, with printed page numbers. Where a manual prints no needle system code, the record says so instead of filling the gap. Some manuals are scans that were read by eye, and Janome records come from archived copies of Janome’s manuals because janome.com blocks automated checks. After each batch of records, a sample is checked again against the source documents.

Limits. Needle Desk is not a compatibility database and does not promise that a needle fits your machine. When the evidence does not establish an answer, the result says so and points to your manual. Guidance on stitch problems lists possible causes from the manuals and is not a diagnosis. Translated editions were drafted and reviewed with AI assistance and have not been validated by human technicians or by native-speaking sewists.

Independence. This site is not affiliated with any manufacturer named on it. Each page shows the date it was last updated; the sources were last checked in October 2026.
