Needle systems, in UK terms.
A UK-oriented reference to common needle-system and size labels. “Overlocker” is used here for the machine often called a “serger” in US sewing references. The system code still comes from your own machine manual.
Labels seen in UK-facing references
Observed sources do not establish a different UK fit standard.
Same family of numbers; local wording varies.
The SCHMETZ UK catalogue lists universal domestic needles as 130/705 H and expresses sizes as NM 70–100 / Size 10–16 for one assorted product. That is a source observation from a UK-facing product listing, not proof that every retailer uses the same pack labels. The manufacturer’s size chart pairs NM 70 with 10, NM 75 with 11, NM 80 with 12, and so on.

Local terms and what they mean
Overlocker or serger?
This UK edition says “overlocker”; some US material says “serger.” The terminology change does not mean needle systems are interchangeable. Follow the exact system named in your machine manual.
Is there a special UK needle size standard?
The UK product listing reviewed here displays metric NM values alongside a “Size” number. We did not find evidence for a distinct UK machine-needle fitting system in these sources. Compatibility is controlled by the machine’s system specification, not the country name.
Why show Singer-style numbers?
They appear paired with NM in the manufacturer chart and in UK-facing product listings. Treat them as two size labels for the same needle size, not as thread size.
Regional source notes
Market-specific observation: one UK SCHMETZ listing uses the phrase “Universal Domestic” and pairs NM with “Size.” Core needle-system and family guidance remains manufacturer-led and shared with the US edition.
