Singer Heavy Duty 4423: which needle?
Singer’s own 4423 manual gives the starting sizes. Here is what it says, page by page, and what it leaves open.

Changing the needle
Turn the power off, put the flat side to the back, push the needle up as far as it goes, and do not use a bent, blunt, or damaged needle (p. 53).

Skipped stitches
The manual’s checks: reinstall the needle flat side back, fit a new needle, choose a needle to suit the thread and fabric, and attach the correct foot (p. 57). These are possible causes, not a diagnosis.
Owner questions.
Do SCHMETZ or other brands fit the 4423?
The manual recommends SINGER needles and does not name a system code such as 15x1 or 130/705H, so it does not confirm other brands. Some third-party sites list 15x1 / 130/705H for this model; that is their claim, not Singer’s. Compare your current needle’s packet with the manual before buying.
Is 80/12 the same as 12/80?
Both name the same pair: metric 80 and US 12. Singer’s needle guide says US sizes run 8 to 18, metric sizes 60 to 110, and most packets print both. The order does not tell you the needle system or point.
How do I set up free-motion quilting?
Singer’s 4423 product page says to lower the feed teeth with the Drop Feed lever for free-motion sewing, then slide it back and turn the handwheel one full turn to raise them. This is a setting, not a fix for skipped stitches.
