Brother PQ1600S: which needle?
The PQ1600S is a high-speed straight-stitch machine. Its manual names the needle system, gives sizes by fabric and thread, and inserts the needle differently from most home machines.
What the PQ1600S manual says
Brother PQ1600S operation manual, version 02 (US release dated 11/10/2023), checked October 20, 2026.
- 1
Needle system
“HLX5 needles are recommended; however, Schmetz 130/705H needles may also be used under normal sewing conditions” (p. 18). The machine ships with ORGAN HLX5 needles: one size 9, two size 11, one 14, one 16 and one ballpoint.
- 2
Size by fabric (p. 18 chart)
Quilt layers with polyester #20–#50 thread: HLX5 #11–#16. Denim with cotton #20–#50 thread: #14–#18. Gingham: #11–#14. Lightweight jersey: #11. Lawn: #9. The chart’s conversion column pairs HLX5 #9, #11, #14, #16, #18 with 130/705H 65, 75, 90, 100, 110.
- 3
Knits and metallic thread
For jersey or tricot, the manual says to use a ballpoint needle or one designed for knits. For metallic thread it says to use a metallic needle with upper tension set on 2.
- 4
Changing the needle (p. 11)
Turn the machine off. Raise the needle to its highest position with the handwheel and lower the presser foot. Loosen the screw, hold the new needle with the flat side to the right, push it in as far as it goes and tighten. Roll the needle on a flat surface first to check it is not bent.
- 5
Needle threader limits (p. 17)
The built-in threader cannot be used with a #11 or #14 needle and #20 or #30 thread, or a #16 needle and #20 thread. Transparent nylon thread works with a #14 or #16 needle.
Needle broke or stitches skip?
From the manual’s troubleshooting table (p. 27). These are possible causes, not a diagnosis.
- 1
Needle breakage
Needle not attached correctly; wrong needle; wrong fabric, needle and thread combination (see the p. 18 chart); pushing or pulling the fabric.
- 2
Skipped stitches
Needle not inserted correctly; wrong needle; bent or dull needle; lint under the needle plate; machine not threaded properly.
- 3
Still happening?
The manual says to take the machine to the shop where you bought it or your nearest authorized Brother dealer for repair.
Owner questions.
Can I use regular 130/705H needles?
The manual allows SCHMETZ 130/705H “under normal sewing conditions” and recommends HLX5. It does not define normal conditions, so if you see skipped stitches or breakage with 130/705H, HLX5 is the manual’s first choice.
Why does the needle go in flat side right?
That is how the PQ1600S manual shows it (p. 11). Many home machines put the flat side to the back, so do not copy another machine’s instructions.
Is this the same as the PQ1500SL?
Brother publishes the same HLX5 recommendation for both, but each has its own manual. See the PQ1500SL page.
